History and general information

In 1987 pensioners in Stilbaai realised that a service centre would be necessary in the future, therefore an organisation was formed where meals and health services were offered to the sick and old. The local municipality offered the service centre a dilapidated house known as the Jagersbosch Homestead as headquarters for the organisation. Members of Jagersbosch and volunteers from the community, led by Mr Roland Rudd and Mrs Anthea Rossouw, renovated the building and services were offered from the >Homestead from 1990. In 1989 services were first offered in Melkhoutfontein. Soeterus was built in 1995 and in 1998 Jagersbosch was registered as a Section 21 organisation.

The following people and organisations assisted with the building and setting up of the Jagersbosch branch in Melkhoutfontein:

20 women and one man, from Melkhoutfontein, helped to build the buildings in Soeterus with the help of Philip Claassens, from the Langeberg Training Centre (a Masakhane project).

Tol Pienaar, well known ecologist, helped with the layout of the Soeterus botanic gardens. The people who live there today maintain it.

Kushido was instrumental in preparing the herb garden.

The Southern Cape Divisional Council and the

Stilbaai City Council helped with funding.

Jagersbosch was involved from the beginning to help Melkhoutfontein and

Volunteers restored the historic house where Jagersbosch is situated.
